Playing Bad Golf Is the Only Way To Improve

Updated: Jul 1, 2020

I think most of us would agree that being bad at something is not that much fun, but it is inevitable for most of us, at least in the beginning. Golf is one of those games that you can't just pick up right away. It takes a lot of practice, instruction and misses to start improving.

It can be a very frustrating game as I have talked about, but the reward is wonderful and most people who play golf will say it is worth the struggle. There is a reason people return again and again to the golf course or driving range.

The game is fun and challenging but it does suck to suck and it can lead to anger and unhappiness. When you hit a bad shot or putt often you tell yourself how much you suck at this game, which your brain then believes, adopting this mentality, and there goes your enjoyment and your low score.

But, this does not have to be the case. We can embrace our bad shots or your "I suck" moments, learn from them and let them go. We need to remind ourselves, it's okay to hit a bad shot or miss a putt, it's part of the game.

I will let you in on a little secret...

every single golfer, no matter if your on the LPGA or PGA, has hit a bad shot and probably the same shot you just hit. We have all done it, it's part of learning the game. It's part of what makes this game so intoxicating.

Golf is a very unique game compared to others, as is meant to be learned throughout your lifetime. It is not a game to be mastered overnight.

My recommendation to you is accept your "I suck" moments.

Find humor and creativity in those moments. Remind yourself they are just a part of the process of learning this game and will bring you one step closer to improving and playing your best golf yet.

I suck at golf, but everytime I suck I know I also get a little bit better and a little bit better.
